For more than two weeks now, Africa has been progressively attacked by the COVID – 19, making many structures to lockdown and various families to stay at home. The church of Christ has not been exempted as most church activities are presently not held in the various church buildings.
This situation was surely not expected by many but the fact that it is here has dramatically changed the way the body of Christ operate. That is the reason why we bring to you 4 lessons the church had to learn prior to this season.
- The Church Is More Than the Physical Building
With the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, large gatherings have been banned, causing many church buildings to be empty. This led to a virtual attendance boost as most churches hold their different programs on social media platforms such as Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, and many others. It actually confirms the fact that, the church is essentially made of the gathering of saints in agreement for a mutual cause, be it online or offline. Thereby confirming the word of God in Matthew 18: 20 which says “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
2. There’s Now More Than Ever A Need of Spiritual Reinforcement
This confinement period puts responsibility on the members of the body of Christ as they are not really urged to watch or follow their different churches programs as when they were physically held. For some, this period is a time of relaxation and rest from all intensive church activities. This is not the right attitude as the body of Christ ought to rise spiritually more than ever. Because « we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. » Ephesians 6:12. And for this reason the church MUST be spiritually strong.
3. The Body of Christ Is Looked Upon More Critically Than Before
The ongoing pandemic has made many to look unto men of God and their denominations to see what they “can” do as for the government and the victims now that money has not been entering their offering baskets as before. But the bitter truth is they are mostly still the same begging under the comments for giveaways. These behaviors and affirmations made the renowned man of God Apostle Johnson Suleman say that “Giving is for the needy, not for the greedy”. This is an occasion in which Christians should really love their neighbors by fostering multiple acts of love and kindness.
4. Amid All the Bad News, The Good News of Jesus Christ Is Still More Relevant Than Ever
This is the place where one does not even have to talk too much. God is the same yesterday, today and forever (Malachi3 :6). No one can doubt of His faithfulness and great mercy in his/her life because He is a covenant keeping God who does not regard the generation we are in. He only respects and accomplishes His Word. Let’s engage in His Word and see what happens (Isaiah 43: 26).
And you, what do you think this lockdown period is teaching the church?
