Contrary to what has been growing in our minds as a society, being born again is not specific to a certain denomination called Pentecostal. Being born again is a process through which true Christian should pass through.
- Acknowledge You Are A Sinner
Before one needs to be forgiven, he/she needs to accept being found guilty for the said offence, the same thing applies with God. He is not a forceful God but before He lets you into His Kingdom, He needs to see in you a deep feeling of regret because of the things you did that grieved Him. You might even say, I am a moral person, I have never lied/insulted/had sex, etc but believe me or not, you are a sinner.
Let’s take a look at 1 John 1: 8: “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us”. This is said because our ancestors – Adam and Eve – are sinners and the law of nature is about generational features exchanges. So that makes us sinners but the good news is that by God’s grace we can be translated from the kingdom of darkness – sin – to that of life. John even went further in the next verse saying “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”. You know what to do!
- Acknowledge The Ministry Of Jesus Christ
The reason we are called Christians is because of the ministry of Christ and a clear statement in Mark 2: 17 where Jesus said that He “Came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance”. It is because of this ministry that He died on the cross for the remission of our iniquity. Years before the arrival of Jesus Christ, the chief priest – man ordained by God for a certain community – had to undergo several rituals of sacrifices for God to forgive His people. The blood shared was that of animals and sometimes it wasn’t even accepted – can you imagine?
But the blood of His dear son was shed on the cross of calvary and His resurrection which happened many years ago intending for a purpose which is serving generations after generations. We are no more bound to do incredible rituals to be forgiven, therefore one needs to recognise this ministry to enjoy a deep fellowship with the Father. Because as Jesus said in John 14: 6 He is: “the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by HIM” (emphasis in capital letter mine).
- Be Willing To Surrender To His Authority
This journey comes with complete submission to the one we are calling Lord and saviour – Jesus. Submission here can be equated to practicing His commandments because it is the guarantee to dwell forever – during our earthly life and eternity – in HIM. 1 John 3: 24 says “he that keeps his commandments dwells in him and he in him”.
The Scriptures are His first channel of communication with us. Applying the commandments contained therein is therefore a guarantee that He will be our shepherd because we let Him take the lead. But just to warn, no matter how hard you try, you can’t do this on your own because it is not easy at all – trust me – that is the reason why you ought to do the following…
- Ask For Mercy And Grace
We must ask for mercy because it is mercy that makes God overlook our offences. He is merciful to the person interested because this God we are talking about “keeps covenant, and shows mercy unto His servants, that walk before Him with all their hearts” 2 Chronicles 6:14.
The psalmist David knew the place of mercy no wonder when praying He said “Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness sake” Psalms 25: 7. This portion of scriptures informs us in the fact that mercy is not about our righteousness but the personality of God – kindness, love. Because it His mercy that permits Him to overlook our sins and encourage a deep fellowship with Him.
We have been given the ten commandments in the old testament through Moses but grace to walk in that truth came through Jesus (John 1: 17). It is through grace we are empowered to keep His commandments and k to His voice.
